The senior boys football team played their first league match of the season away to Meldrum Academy last Thursday and were unlucky to lose 7-4 in the end. Meldrum dominated the first half and were 4-1 up at half-time after some sloppy defending from Alford. Devon had made a number of crucial saves to keep the score-line down at the break. The Alford goal came from a well-worked set-piece, Keigan drilled in a corner to the front post and Liam expertly glanced his header into the top corner of the far post.
The second half started with another Meldrum goal but then the boys managed to get a grip of the game. Liam sent a ball through to Keigan who scored with a cheeky chip over the ‘keeper. Alford got their third of the game 5 minutes later when Sean sent a terrific toe-poke over the Meldrum defence for Logan who squared it for Keigan to get his second of the game. Confidence levels were growing in the Alford team and Marley made it 5-4 with 15 minutes left with a composed finish into the bottom corner after another through ball from Liam.
Unfortunately, the boys ran out of steam in the final 10 minutes and Meldrum scored a further 2 goals to give a final score of 7-4. This was a much improved performance from the Alford team and they showed plenty of grit and determination throughout as well as some great passages of play. Well done boys!
The U14 team also travelled to Meldrum last week and played in an entertaining 2-1 defeat. The first half had been a very even affair and ended 0-0. Alford took the lead at the start of the second half after a shift in formation and looked in a comfortable position. Unfortunately, Meldrum got themselves back into the game midway through the second half and eventually went on to win the game in the last 5 minutes. All the boys worked really hard and were unlucky to be on the losing side in the end.
