The Senior Boys football team played their first match since February 2020 on Thursday afternoon in the second round of the Scottish Cup against Gordonstoun. Alford won the match 2-0 thanks to 2 goals from Marley.
The opening exchanges were fairly scrappy as both teams got used to the heavy pitch and Alford struggled to find the space to get the ball down and play. Alford struck first through a very well taken free-kick by Marley. He curled the ball into the keeper’s bottom left corner from 25 yards, a great finish. The rest of the first half was highly competitive but mostly played in the middle of the pitch. Half-time Gordonstoun 0 – 1 Alford.
The second half started brightly for Alford as we controlled the ball and started to stretch the Gordonstoun defence, leading to more space for our midfield to play in. In the 55th minute, Cameron took a quick throw-in to Ewan, who arrowed a 50-yard ball across the pitch to the on-rushing Marley, who calmly slotted the ball beyond the keeper to make it 2-0 Alford. A peach of an assist from Ewan and composed finish from Marley.
From then on, Alford controlled proceedings and had a number of chances to add to the lead. Good strikes from Shay & Thomas went narrowly wide, Marley had a superb volley ruled offside, Arran had a shot deflected wide and Callum came close to scoring a third, too. There was a bit of a stramash in the Alford box in the 90th minute but it came to nothing for the home side. The Alford defence stayed strong and resilient throughout and Devon did not have a save to make throughout the game. Full-time Gordonstoun 0 – 2 Alford.
A very encouraging performance from Alford and great way to start the season, the boys all worked hard for each other and showed a lot of quality during the 90 minutes. We go into the 3rd round and are looking forward to taking on Mintlaw in the league next week.
Thank you to Gordonstoun for a good game and the added bonus of feeding us after too!
