PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE

PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE

Now that it has been confirmed there will be no further industrial action, we are looking forward to welcoming parents and the wider community along to our Performing Arts Showcase on Thursday 23rd March at 7pm.  The format will be a relaxed evening with performances from a number of individuals and groups across various venues in the campus.  The event is free but we would welcome donations on the evening to support future concerts.  The event will begin in the school canteen (our “Main Stage”) for a very special performance by the school orchestra, pipe band and Inverurie Concert Band.  From 7.30 – 9.00pm, guests are then welcome to follow their own choice of progamme by visiting various venues and enjoying music and drama performances.  This includes our Young Musician of the Year competition which is sponsored by the Rotary.  There is still room for more young people to get invovled in this event so if your son or daughter plays a musical instrument, sings, recites poetry, dances, etc., please drop an email to the school and we will get a consent form sent home with your child and add their name to the programme.

10 Drummers Drumming & 8 Pipers Piping

10 Drummers Drumming & 8 Pipers Piping

Well done to the Alford Academy Pipe Band who performed this afternoon with the Inverurie Concert Band at their Christmas Concert in the Thainstone Centre, supported by their tutors Ian Dallas and Scott Niven.  Playing Highland Cathedral, Amazing Grace and Celtic Crest to an audience of well over 200 people, the band were on top form.  For the majority of pupils, this was their first formal concert and the standard of playing was exceptional.  Three members of our school orchestra also performed with the band after missing out on our school concert due to its postponement last week.  Many thanks to Ian Dallas, Scott Niven, Hamish Wood, Ben Light and Nicola Tierney for rehearsing the pupils involved and for their support of the performing arts at Alford Academy.

Congratulations to all our pupils who took part in the 2021 Lathallan Piping and Drumming Solos Contest.  This was an online event with pupils submitting videos which were then ranked by a panel of expert judges.  There were 104 entries in total and the results were announced on St Andrews Day.  Congratulations in particular to Sarah and Jack (below) who won in their categories.

Inverurie Music Award Scheme Continues to Support Our Young Musicians

Inverurie Music Award Scheme Continues to Support Our Young Musicians

Alford Academy pupils once again have an opportunity to submit a request for financial support from the Inverurie Music Award Scheme.  Since its launch in 2019, a number of our pupils have received a financial award to assist with the cost of purchasing a musical instrument, sheet music, lessons, travel to workshops, etc.  Full details about the scheme and the eligibility requirements can be found here.  Although the application deadline is 12th November, these have to be approved by Mr Trueman.  Please therefore have completed application forms submitted to him no later than Friday 5th November (remember, remember….).

Alford Academy Pipe Band bring Inverurie to a Standstill

Thanks and well done to the members of the school pipe band who firstly played for the official opening of the newly refurbished Alford COOP on Friday morning.  This afternoon the band piped Santa Claus through the streets of Inverurie alongside Inverurie Pipe Band before playing in front of the Town Hall for the annual lights switch on and a huge crowd of supportive onlookers.  Well done to all the pupils who were involved (with a special mention for Finlay Sewell in S1) and thanks to the parents that helped out and of course Ian Dallas and Scott Niven.

Menin Gate Success

Menin Gate Success

What an unbelievable and unforgettable evening as the Alford Academy Pipe Band provided the musical backdrop to the wreath laying ceremony at Menin Gate.  Thousands gathered including 20 plus coaches of school pupils from all across Europe.  Dozens of complete strangers spoke to us afterwards to comment on how outstanding our school band were.  Many emotional onlookers came over to commend the band on the quality of their playing.  We now head back to Bruges tired but exceptionally proud of what we have been part of today.
