Thank you – Alford Academy Careers Evening

Thank you – Alford Academy Careers Evening

Yesterday evening Alford Academy hosted a Careers Evening for its Young People.

The event was a massive success and an invaluable experience for the young people, parents / carers and staff of Alford Academy.

The feedback has been fantastic and having 54 different organisations in one building showcased to the Young People what is on offer to them here in the North East of Scotland and beyond.

Head Teacher Angela Wotherspoon said “It was great to see over 50 organisations with over 100 delegates represents at our first careers fair in 4 years. The support from the community was outstanding with pupils, parents and staff visiting the exhibitors and being able to see what is available post school for our learners.

Delegates were delighted with the organisation, hospitality and attendance at the event. It was great to see our young people, parents/carers talking and engaging with the exhibitors. It was also fantastic to see our young people being such good ambassadors and helping the exhibitors and visitors to our school get the best experience on the evening.

It was a real team effort from all our staff, especially Romana Richards, DYW Employer School Coordinator, Stuart Cookson, DHT and our fantastic support team of technicians, office staff, janitors and catering team.

There was a real buzz in the air and we are delighted to be hosting events like this again”.

A pupil said – “The career evening was fantastic. There were so many different employers and universities/colleges to visit and speak about potential pathways. I really enjoyed talking to people who came in, to find out about their jobs and how I could get into that field. There were so many different stalls which covered many different sectors. We really enjoyed the evening”.

Thank you to everyone who came to support the Careers Evening.  We hope to build on this event in future years. Please  Click Here to provide feedback.

These events would not be possible without the support of employers and the organisations they represent.  Thank you to our exhibitors for giving up their valuable free time to make the event such a brilliant, worthwhile, and memorable experience for all involved.  I would like to thank the following organisations for their support and attendance last night.

EDF Renewables deliver Wind Energy input

EDF Renewables deliver Wind Energy input

Alford Academy S3 Physics Pupils were given a fantastic classroom input from EDF Renewables this morning.

Oliver Oakley, Lead Technician for Dorenell Wind Farm and Laura Noone, Area Manager for EDF Renewables in North Scotland came into Alford Academy to talk about wind energy.  Oliver and Laura outlined their career path and current job role, providing pupils with an insight into their backgrounds and day-to-day working life.

Oliver Oakley explained that Dorenell Wind Farm (20 miles from Alford) is the largest EDF Wind Farm in Europe, it is home to 59 turbines that can power 106,000 homes.  Oliver outlined the physics of a wind turbine which enabled pupils to see how their learning at Alford Academy is transferable to future careers and the world of work.

Laura Noone went on to talk about how EDF Renewables will play vital role in helping Scottish Government ambition to deploy 20GW of onshore wind by 2030.  She also explained the various routes into the sector including the apprenticeship schemes they offer to young people aged 16 and above.

The feedback from the young people of Alford Academy has been really positive.  We are very grateful to EDF Renewables for coming into Alford Academy and we look forward to welcoming them back to the school in the future.
