S5 Mock Interviews with Employers

S5 Mock Interviews with Employers

On Tuesday 14th December S5 pupils had the opportunity to engage with real employers from various companies to participate in a mock interview. Employers from Mackie’s of Scotland, Neptune Energy, Subsea 7 and Serica Energy took time out of their busy schedules to interview our pupils.

After the interview process, the employers provided valuable feedback to our students on how they came across and how to improve for the “real” interview which will happen in the future.

Initial feedback from the employers was how polite our students came across and how well they managed to answer the questions, especially as this may have been their first virtual interview.

It was clear to see that students saw the value in this activity and there was a real “buzz” when they came out of the interview.

Some pupils said:

“I think it was a worthwhile experience and the feedback was really helpful. I feel I would know better what to do and not do. The interviewer was really nice and it has definitely given me confidence that I could do a real interview”.

“It was a really useful experience to help prepare me for the future. The person who interviewed me was very polite and reassuring”.

“The interviewer was very nice and helpful. I feel a lot more confident about any interviews that that may come up in the near future.”

The employer engagement event was very successful and we would like to thank all employers for giving us their time to help prepare our students for their future. We will look forward to repeating this event in the future too.

Kindness Pandemic

Kindness Pandemic

The S1 study and organisation class, with Mrs Anderson, have completed a kindness project based learning task to try and create a pandemic of kindness at Alford Academy as part of kindness week.   We worked in groups to think of ideas to do with kindness.  We also wanted to develop our organising skills and confidence by completing this project.

Our class had a discussion about kindness and what we could do to spread kindness around the school.  We had lots of ideas but we picked the best ones and also the ones we could do within the covid regulations.  We decided we were going to send staff a positive sticky note and leave it in their pigeon holes. We also left positive sticky notes on random lockers for the pupils. We designed signs to remind people to hold the doors open for each other and also researched and shared kindness tips and quotes in the school bulletin for 2 weeks.

The skills we learned during our kindness pandemic project were as follows:

We used teamwork when we wrote kindness tips for the bulletin. We used our numeracy skills when we counted all of the lockers and pigeon holes. We had to be confident when we asked the headteacher if we could put up our hand signs on the doors. We used our computer skills when using google docs when writing the blog, researching ideas and for making the questionnaire. We all worked creatively when we designed and drew our hand signs. Finally, we communicated with each other throughout the project to complete the work quickly and effectively.

Our questionnaire feedback included some really positive and heart-warming responses.  Some examples were that the positive notes made people feel  happy, energised, pleased, worthy, chuffed, excited, seen, and part of the team.   Some people thought the tips in the bulletin were very helpful as a daily reminder to stay positive, have courage and be kind.  One response said this was a nice idea by nice people and another thanked us for organising the project.  Reading all the feedback has made us overjoyed and proud of our project.

Remember and always be kind!

S1 Study and Organisation.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echos are truly endless.

Send out a kind email or card.

Emergency Closure Drill: There will be an emergency closure practice on Tuesday 14 December between 10:45 and 11:10 am. This is where staff and pupils practice what would happen if we had to close the whole school during the day and send pupils home because of very bad weather or a power cut.

Before Tuesday there are two important tasks for pupils to do:

(1)  If you travel by bus you must have your bus pass with you every day – if you look at your bus pass you will see you have a number on it that starts SS604 followed by a letter eg SS604B, SS604D etc. This is your bus contract number and that will help you when we do an emergency closure.

(2)   Look out for the posters all around the school which tell you what room to go to in an emergency closure. Pupils from each bus are allocated to a classroom so you need to know your bus contract number in order to go to the right room. Pupils transported by parents and village pupils also have a special room to report to. Please go and find a poster and check which room you should go to before Tuesday, so you know where to go straight away when we do the practice. At the practice, when you hear the tannoy please take your bag and jacket and go quickly and quietly to your “bus” room. When you are in the room, the teachers will do some checks – please stay in your bus room until you hear a second tannoy message telling you to go to break (S1-3) or go back to your P3 class (S4s).

Foundation Apprenticeship Information online session – 14th December

Foundation Apprenticeship Information online session – 14th December

At Alford Academy we are offering Foundation Apprenticeships to our senior pupils at level 4,5 and 6. Foundation Apprenticeships are designed to enhance the learning experience with a work placement which is so valuable for young people.

More information on Foundation Apprenticeships will be shared with pupils and parents in February before course choice forms are issued for next year however a parent information session can be viewed below:

Skills Development Scotland and National Parents Forum for Scotland are arranging a session on Foundation Apprenticeships for parents and carers on Tuesday 14th December from 7pm-8pm.

This session gives the opportunity to find out about Foundation Apprenticeships including who they’re for, how they work and their benefits. During this one hour session we’ll talk through the value and equivalency of the qualification in terms of SCQF levels and UCAS points. We’ll also share pupil journeys and how Foundation Apprenticeships helped them progress onto a job such as a Modern or Graduate Apprenticeship, college or university. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions at the end.
