World Book Day 2022
World Book Day is this Thursday, 3rd March. The theme for this year is “I am a reader” and we have a number of activities for our pupils, in school and at home, to take part in to explore the idea of them as a reader.
For the first time we will be holding a READATHON with our S1s.
Read for Good’s Readathon has been running in schools since 1984, motivating millions of children to read for pleasure. The money raised by schools is used to deliver brand new books and storyteller visits to all of the UK’s major children’s hospitals, as well as supporting school libraries.
“Readathon is a fantastic way to encourage reading for pleasure. Pupils can choose to read whatever they love which creates a brilliant buzz around books throughout the school. Focusing on reading for fun is a proven way of narrowing the attainment gap as we – like all schools – recover from lost teaching time. And we’re incredibly proud to play a part in bringing stories to children in hospital too!”
Information will be sent out to parents/guardians of S1s with the details of how to be involved with Readathon.
S2’s and S3’s will be populating their Reading Passports with stamps designed by themselves to reflect places they have visited during their reading.
This includes somewhere they have visited in a book shared with family – audio or physical – and the chance to choose where they might want to visit next.
S4/5/6
Our seniors will also have the option to create their own Reading Passport remembering that reading lowers stress levels as well as raising literacy levels, so an ideal way to take a break from studying!
The library will also be hosting pupils for World Book Day with book jenga, book blind dates and a special display to help pupils choose their next destination and have plenty of material for their Readathons.
We would encourage you to speak with our young folk about what they are reading and what they’ve been up to in school for World Book Day. And, of course, to take the time yourselves to have a time out and pick up a book – virtually or otherwise!
