Senior Horizons- CV and Cover letter Session

Senior Horizons- CV and Cover letter Session

On Tuesday 1st March our senior pupils in S5 and S6 who will be leaving Alford Academy in summer 2022, were invited to take part in a practical session lead by our career advisor, to help write a CV in preparation for their future pathway.

The turn out was very good and pupils followed a step by step process to create their personal CV’s and covering letters.

The session was lead by Jemma Kinnaird, our Skills Development Scotland Career advisor and Aimee Maitland, our Developing the Young Workforce school coordinator.

After the session, pupils were equipped with an up to date CV ready for distributing to potential employers.

Pupils said:

“This was extremely helpful and informative and now I have a CV that I can use straight away and update regularly when I need to”.

“Very helpful and now I can write a CV. This helped me develop my personal CV and made me think of aspects to add to my CV that I wouldn’t have considered”.

February-start courses

For pupils who may be considering leaving school over winter, we have places available on nine full-time courses across our three main campuses in February 2022. These include courses in sport, science, photography, media and journalism, computing, engineering, business and automotive, and will give students a qualification before summer that allows them to progress to the next level of study in August.

In addition, we have launched an exciting new taster course called Get Ready for College, which is designed for those unsure what they want to study. This unique course, which is SCQF level 4, gives students the opportunity to sample different College subjects and to experience the transition into further education at College. It introduces a range of learning activities in areas such as Care, Sport, Social Studies, Enterprise, Wellbeing and Personal Development.

University of Glasgow Open Day and Software Engineering Course

We realise it is still early the new academic term and everyone is settling in but we are keen to give you a quick heads up on 2022 opportunities on the UofG Software Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship (GA).

It would be great if you could share this information across your DYW schools and college community so they can cascade to fellow educators, students, parents and carers. Thank you for your support.

Good to know about the GA:

  • We flex on our entry standard grades (Bs not As) and offer a bespoke HNC/D route
  • Our 8-week on campus block learning creates a strong student experience
  • because the degree is combined with a job it is a great opportunity for students who are ready to work and learn, and those for whom a salary will enable them to continue their education.
