Trip to RGU School of Computing Christmas Lecture

Trip to RGU School of Computing Christmas Lecture

A brilliant afternoon was had at the RGU School of Computing and Digital Media Christmas Lecture.  Pupils were shown demonstrations of a robot called Pepper who uses AI to communicate.  He provided many entertaining interludes!  The next live demonstration was Augmented Reality, a combination of VR and MR with Adobe Aero, very impressive technology.  Next up was Ian who showed us a live cyber hack, in 3 countries, with each attack represented by a Minecraft character/turkey (see picture) and Kyle made us choose between a chatbot and a real santa to work out who was computer and who was human.  Some pupils ate their own body weight in Quality Street and won some really cool prizes, it was a terrific afternoon at the awesome Sir Ian Wood Building and we were wowed by the amazing facilities and impressive architecture.  We’ll be back next year.

Christmas Clothing Swap for Charity

Today, during break and lunch, we will be asking children to bring in a Christmas jumper to swap or to pay a donation of £1 to buy a new (preloved) jumper. The money raised from this will be donated to the Trussell Trust (food bank).  There will be a ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ run by the Interact Group, at school on Thursday 22nd December, allowing pupils to wear their newly purchased/swapped Christmas jumper, with all donations also going the Trussell Trust.

We hope that this event will save lots of Christmas jumpers from entering landfill, being incinerated, or just being lost and unloved at the back of a wardrobe, and that the children will enjoy choosing a new preloved jumper to use this year and potentially beyond!

RAF Humanitarian Aid input

RAF Humanitarian Aid input

Alford Academy S3 Modern Studies  – RAF Humanitarian Aid Mission Challenge

S3 Modern Studies pupils received an input today from Flight Lieutenant Morris of the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Pupils were given an insight into the variety of careers available within the RAF.  Flight Lieutenant Morris explained the important role of the RAF in Humanitarian Aid Missions across the world.

During the lesson the pupils were tasked with a scenario based challenge whereby they were given a mission brief that outlined that a (fictitious) Caribbean Island has been hit by a storm.  The Island’s emergency services were struggling under the pressure and much of the infrastructure had been destroyed.  The RAF were being deployed to coordinate the provision of aid throughout the country and work with the hospitals to deal with the casualties.

The pupils were tasked with a series of questions to assist the RAF in deploying a variety of aircraft and specialists to help with the Humanitarian Aid Mission on the Caribbean Island.  Through their answers the pupils decided what personnel, aircraft and resources should be deployed and were able to explain their reasoning.

The pupils fully engaged with the exercise and the feedback was positive.  Pupils asked a range of questions about the variety of careers available within the Royal Air Force.

Thank you to Flight Lieutenant Morris for coming into Alford Academy today.
