Why do we enter S4 pupils doing National 5 mathematics for National 5 Applications of Mathematics?

This is a model that is in place across many schools in Scotland, including around half of the schools in Aberdeenshire, and the benefit to pupils is that it gives them an additional qualification at National 5, and additional SCQF Tariff points for college, university or job applications.

There is significant crossover between the N5 Maths and the Applications of Maths course, and in general it has been found that pupils who are attaining at N5 Maths cope well with the N5 Applications of Maths content, which is looking at ‘real-life’ scenarios, using maths that they have primarily already studied.  While it does mean an extra exam we believe that the benefits significantly outweigh the inconvenience of the additional formal assessments required.
